Cobus vd Merwe
Cobus van der Merwe is a South African bodybuilder whose chiselled form, rippling muscles and definitive posing technique are making the bodybuilding industry sit up and take notice. Competing since 1997, he made history by becoming the first South African to take second place in the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB) World Men’s Championships in Morocco earlier this year.
This champion of South African bodybuilding has won numerous accolades on the local circuit, among them first place at the IFBB SA Heavyweight (2002), Musclemania Heavyweight (2004) and the SA Super Heavyweight (2013) competitions.
Cobus has featured regularly in industry publications, including the Muscle Evolution magazine, as well as in mainstream media such as Die Burger and Beeld.
His passion goes beyond merely competing. Bodybuilding is Cobus’ lifestyle and he conveys its principles to the masses through the regular columns he contributes to Muscle Evolution, as well as through his capacities as a Certified Let’s Live NLP Life and Sports Coach, motivational speaker, and corporate health and fitness trainer.
Cobus plans to take his unique training style and the “secret weapon” mentality that earned him IFBB honours to the masses by releasing his own training DVD. “My bodybuilding philosophy is to keep things simple. I teach people the principles of bodybuilding so they can understand that by using them, they can be successful at anything in life,” he said.
A goal that he constantly pushes himself towards is to become one of the best bodybuilders in South Africa. His fighting spirit is also spurring him to go professional to tackle dominating American bodybuilding. His motto in life is: “Refuse to be average; dare to be different and never give up on what you really want!”
As a husband and father of two, Cobus relaxes by enjoying time with his family and going out to the movies.
